PacifiCan

Summary

The premise for PacifiCan’s project was simple: the previous identity didn’t capture the diverse economic regions of BC effectively – this needed to change. Brett Snowball was contracted to create a identity that felt authentic, connected with federal mandates, and worked through challenging legislature to communicate economic empowerment.

Objective

PacifiCan’s original mark was developed by an internal government agency to bring a contemporary feel to the regional development agency. While the RDA has undergone a transition from Western Economic Development (BC & Alberta), to the stand-alone British Columbia agency, the wordmark, supplemental graphics and colour palette didn’t feel representational of BC’s vastly diverse economic regions.

Approach

We built a WCAG AA2 compliant visual identity rooted in provincial storytelling. A newly revised identity system that takes inspiration from the Pacific region, while being representative of the people who inhabit our province.

Solution

Throughout the partnership, we developed a newly revised identity system that takes inspiration from the Pacific region, while being representative of the people who inhabit our province. Special attention was placed on accessibility guidelines to ensure the branding was easily recognizable and identifiable for all those who might have visual impairments. The revised PacifiCan identity was released in Q3 of 2022. This was the largest re-branding project the Canadian Government took on in 2022, and received a 78% approval rating across all federal departments. Ultimately nominated for an award from the Government of Canada.
